Types of Map Layers

A feature is a record stored within a Map Layer.


Map Layers can store either: Points, Lines or Polygons.




Add an object to a Map Layer

To add an object to your map:

  1. Click the Cog alongside the Map Layer you want to add an object to
  2. Click 'Add Feature'. This should open the Feature Editor on the left of your map window.
  3. Draw the object on the map:
    • For points, just do a single click on the map
    • For lines, do a series of single clicks, then double click when you're finished
    • For polygons, do a series of single clicks, then click on your original point to close the shape.
  4. Add any attribution to your object in the left-hand panel.
  5. To save your object, click 'Save' button in the bottom left.


Add a rectangle object to a Map Layer

Note: This feature is only available when you're editing a polygon layer.


To add a rectangle with a custom or preset size:

  1. Click the Rectangle icon in the Feature Editor
  2. Enter a width and height value in metres, or choose one of the presets from the drop-down
  3. Click OK
  4. Click on the map to place that shape
  5. Drag the shape as required
  6. Rotate the shape as required using the red circle to the bottom-right of the shape
  7. Click Save




Editing a Object

To edit the shape or the text stored within an object:

  1. Click on the map over the location of the object you want to edit.
  2. Select it from the list in the left-hand panel (if it finds multiple objects).
  3. Click the Pencil icon to enter the editing mode.
  4. To change the geometry:
    1. For Points, single click on the map where you want to move the point to.
    2. For Lines and Polygons, drag the blue lines into the position you want them.
  5. The text boxes in the left-hand panel are editable to change any text you have stored within the object.
  6. Click Save.





Deleting a Feature

To permanently delete an object:

  1. Click on the map over the location of the object you want to delete.
  2. Select it from the list in the left-hand panel (if it finds multiple objects).
  3. Click the Trash icon in the left-hand panel.
  4. Click OK to confirm the deletion.





Undoing your drawing progress if you make a mistake

Click the back arrow in the Feature Editor pane or press CTRL + Z or Command Z on your keyboard to undo your progress.





Snapping to other objects

You can snap to other objects in the same layer by enabling snapping. Click the magnet icon then 'This Layer'.





Removing specific nodes from an object

You can remove specific nodes from an object by clicking the 'Remove Vertex' icon in the Feature Editor then clicking on the nodes along a line or on the perimeter of a polygon.
