Overview

There are two steps needed in order to add information into Parish Online.

  • Create a Map Layer to add your data into.
  • Use the Editor tool to begin adding data to your layer.

Creating Map Layers in Parish Online allows you to collate all your information into individual layers that you can display on top of a base map.

Here is two different ways to create layers.

Layers from Template

We have created a range of layer templates that you can choose from to start adding your information onto your map.

To set up a new template layer:

  1. Open the Control Panel by selecting the 'cog' symbol on the right-hand side of the screen beside the logout button.
  2. Then open the map layers section by selecting the white plus icon on the right.
  3. Select ‘add’ from the options menu at the bottom of the tab, and then select ‘Template’ in the Create New Layer window.
  4. A list of the available templates will then be visible. Choose a template by clicking on it and pressing ‘create layer’ at the bottom. The layer will be added to your available map layers.
  5. Close the control panel. The layer can now be found in a blue collection in the Map Layers Panel (left-side of the screen) called Parish Layers.
  6. Click the ‘plus’ symbol beside Parish Layers to expand the collection, then press the layer you just added and click apply.

This will display your new layer.

Creating a Custom Layer

To set up a new custom layer:

  1. Open the control panel by selecting the 'cog' symbol, on the right-hand side of the screen beside the logout button.
  2. Open the map layers section by selecting the white plus icon on the right.
  3. Select ‘add’ from the options menu at the bottom of the tab, and then select ‘Custom’ in the Create New Layer window.
  4. This opens the ‘Create new spatial table’ window. Filling this table out will create a new layer.
  5. Give your layer a title and a suitable description. Geometry type determines what the data on your map for this particular layer will look like – points, lines or polygons.
  6. Create columns or fields of information that we might want to keep for each piece of data we add. For example, for local green spaces we would want to know their ‘Name’, ‘Settlement’, and ‘Reason for Designation’.
  7. To add these fields, select the ‘create new field’ icon displayed on the right-hand side of the window.
  8. Input the title of the information you wish to add, such as ‘Reference’, ‘Name’ or ‘Reason for Designation’. We advise you always set the character length to 150, but if you wish to add a longer description it may be worth setting the character length to a higher value.
  9. Click insert on the right of the tab. Add more fields where applicable.
  10. When you are finished, press 'Save' to save all the fields for that layer. The layer will be added to your available map layers.
  11. Close the control panel. The layer can now be found in a blue collection in the Map Layers Panel (left-side of the screen) called Parish Layers.
  12. Click the ‘+’ symbol beside Parish Layers to expand the collection, then press the layer you just added and click apply. This will display your new layer.
